Frank Mir: “I’m Going To Hurt Roy Nelson”
Former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir, is seeking to regain what once was his. After suffering a slight setback against Shane Carwin, Mir defeated Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic with a devastating third round knockout. Next on Mir’s route to reclaim the coveted heavyweight title is heavy-handed slugger, Roy Nelson, at UFC 130 on May 28.
Mir isn’t worried. He feels that he possesses all the tools to beat Nelson in more dominant fashion than Nelson’s last opponent, Junior Dos Santos.
“Every fight I've hungered to win more than the last,” Mir said. “The key to beating Roy really is not to move backwards ... Fights that I've seen of Roy when people have done well with him is when they move forward.
“If he makes a mistake ... I'm a lot bigger than Dos Santos and I hit a lot harder. I'm a taller, longer athlete ... quicker; I'll constantly pepper him with shots when he comes in and making him pay when I do hit him with something.
“When I hit Cheick Kongo, the punch alone threw him halfway across the Octagon. On the night of the fight, neither one of us is gonna pull any punches. If I catch him with something, I'll try to hurt him with it.”
It seems as though with his statement, not only did Mir display confidence in regards to his upcoming bout with Nelson, but he also tactically name dropped Junior Dos Santos. Dos Santos- who was to fight current champion, Cain Velasquez before that fight was delayed due to Velasquez injuring his shoulder - will be facing Shane Carwin for the next title opportunity. Mir may be looking to catapult his name back into championship talk by creating a little controversy with the divisions’ current challenger.
