Betting Odds Favor Dos Santos Over Velasquez
UFC heavyweight contender, Junior Dos Santos, reeled off another incredible performance this past Saturday with a win over Shane Carwin at UFC 131, so it’s not that surprising that the betting public has huge respect for him in his upcoming battle with current champion, Cain Velasquez. What is surprising, however, is the fact that Santos opened as a favorite over the current champion, even if it’s only by a small margin.
Once Santos earned the decision nod, his upcoming title opportunity was once again guaranteed. It was only seconds later that betting odds were swirling around placing Santos at a -125 slight favorite over Velasquez at -105.
Santos performance over Carwin was without a doubt spectacular, namely in the opening round where I assumed Carwin had an advantage. These betting odds, however appear to be a prime example of the phrase, “what have you done for me lately?”
Hard-hitting, undefeated, current champion, Cain Velasquez, has been sitting on the sidelines with an injury to his rotator-cuff since October of 2010 when he claimed the heavyweight title over former champion, Brock Lesnar. Maybe due to his layoff, people have forgotten that Velasquez, winner of nine straight career fights, has finished eight by TKO, six of them in the very first round. Velasquez was the man that dethroned a hugely larger man in Brock Lesnar, with a complete one-sided pounding and a first round TKO.
I don’t mean to take anything away from Santos’ recent win this past weekend, but I’d have to side with the unbeaten current champion.
