UFC 143: Live Results & Play-By-Play

The UFC is back in Las Vegas with UFC 143 featuring the welterweight interim title fight between former Strikeforce champion, Nick Diaz, and former WEC champion, Carlos Condit, with a shot at the champion, Georges St. Pierre at stake. Also on the card, heavyweight Roy Nelson will take on Fabricio Werdum and Josh Koscheck will meet Mike Pierce in the cage for another intriguing welterweight fight.

Ed Herman vs. Clifford Starks
Rd1: Ed quickly in and both men begin firing. This fight won’t last long. Ed to his knees but =quickly back up. Starks clinches and has Ed pinned against the cage. Starks separates. Jab from Starks. Big Right from Starks.  Another. And another, fighters both fire, Ed with a right that lands and back to the clinch with Ed in control this time around. Starks reverses. Ed pushes free and throws a couple of knees. Starks continues to stalk firing and drives Ed back into the fence. Another big right lands square on Herman’s cheek. Herman fires and earns the takedown. Starks trying to stand, Herman loses control, Starks reverses into half guard and begins to tee off. Herman pulls Starks in to defend as the round comes to a close. Solid 10-9 for Starks.

Rd2: Herman with a body kick and loses balance falling to the mat. Starks lets him stand. Starks quick to the clinch. Ed able to trip Starks to the mat and jump into full mount. Starks tries to stand by turning over and Herman takes his back. Sets in his hooks, pulls the rear naked and forces the tap. Ed herman wins by submission!

Renan Barão vs. Scott Jorgensen
Rd1: Leg kick from Renan, jab misses for Scott and Renan just misses a spinning back kick body shot. Lands that one sending Scott to the fence. Renan runs in to attack and fighters clinch and fight for control. Fighters separate and reset. Fighters jabbing. Scott with a big right that’s blocked. Renan lands a left.  Leg kick from Scott, and now one from Renan.  Front body kick from Scott. Scott lands a right. Another big one lands on Renan’s chin. Leg chop from Renan. Scott ducks and shoots but doesn’t commit. Renan clinches but unable to do much and Scott separates. Renan with a spinning back kick to the face but mostly checked. Renan lands a quick right left. And another left at the buzzer. Close round goes to Renan 10-9.

Rd2: Renan high kick checked, and a front body kick also blocked. Fighters clinch for a moment before separating. Renan with a right and a right body shot. Leg kick from Renan. Scott with an uppercut that appears to land. Renan with a right, backing up Scott. Renan presses in firing more shots before putting a spinning back kick on his chest. Scott shoots, but Renan gets the takedown into Scott’s guard. Renan with body shots as he tries to posture but Scott is defending well. Scott springs to his feet and pushes separation. Scott with new life in his step. Body kick. Right lands for Renan. Leg chop for Renan. Scott finds a home for a couple of shots then takes a front kick to the chest. Another close round in favor of Renan 10-9.

Rd3: Scott pressing the action early in round three stalking Renan. Renan only countering as he looks as though he’s tiring. Renan with a nice combo landing about four straight punches. Renan is landing at will and Scott keeps walking through it. Scott with a front kick, but does little to Renan. Renan lands a left on the chin, Fighters are trading blows, but Renan’s landing percentage is much higher in this round. Leg kick from Renan. Another. Another! Scott’s corner warns him of the expiring time with less than a minute to go. Both men continue at their pace, but Scott can’t do anything to earn the round. Renan should have a clean sweep for a 30-27 decision.

Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce
Rd1: Pierce stalking early. Fires, shoots and clinch against the fence. Mike pressing, Josh tries to separate, hits the body a couple of times and Pierce regains control. Josh with a short right to Mike’s head and Josh circles out reset to the center. Pierce a little more tentative. Pierce fires in again, but eats a couple of shots on his way in. Josh this times muscles Mike to the cage. Fighters trying to trade knees but nothing hitting, and they separate. Pierce with a couple of left jabs.  Both men firing at will. Mike caught Josh. Josh backs up and regains composure. Mike lands again on his chin. Josh stalking and swinging, makes Mike uncomfortable and he shoots and takes the fight back to the cage to end a 10-9 round in favor of Pierce.

Rd2: Fighters pawing out jabs trying to find their distance. Pierce engages the clinch and again drags this one to the fence. Crowd unhappy. Josh reverses. Pierce pushes away from the cage and separates with an uppercut. Pierce lands a left jab. Another.  Josh having a hard time finding comfort. Josh stalking forward, but not able to land anything. Josh grabs a clinch and throws a nice knee. Josh separates with a hard elbow. Josh shoots in, grabs a double and easily takes this fight to the mat. After a moment of light work, Pierce able to stand back to his feet. Close round 10-9 for Josh.

Rd3: Both men swinging early in round 3, Josh lands a nice right. Left jab for Josh. Pierce shoots, grabs a single and eventually able to take this fight down, but Josh quickly back to his feet. Fighters clinched at the cage, Josh reverses and delivers a knee to the body before separating. Both fighters firing, and clinch. Short elbow from Pierce. Right from Josh and separate. Left jab from Josh. Josh shoots grabs a single but cannot close the deal getting stuffed at the cage, but stays fully committed as the crowd boos the lack of action. Herb Dean resets the action back to the center.  Herb stops the fight due to an eye-poke from Josh and warns him heavily before continuing action. Fighters begin trading as the fights gets back underway. Josh ducks in grabs a double and takes Pierce to the mat. Pierce stands m throws an elbow, Josh with a big right as the round ends. Close round 10-9 Koscheck, but this fight could go either way.

Roy Nelson vs. Fabricio Werdum
Rd1: Nelson with a big smile is anxious to get underway.  Leg kick from Werdum. Nelson stalking. Knee from Werdum followed by a decent combo and a body kick. Werdum attacks Nelson, quick to tie him up, take his back, to the mat. Nelson escapes, and back to his feet. Werdum has Nelson in the clinch against the cage and sending knees in to his body. That one to his head. Nelson reverses. Nelson with short lefts. Werdum with more knees. Rosenthal stops the fight to let a Dr. look at Nelson. Nelson is dripping blood. Brief moment and fighters continue. Leg kick from Werdum. Another. Nelson keeps stalking. Werdum with a kick, Nelson catches it, lands square on his nose and Werdum falls to the mat. Nelson jumps to take advantage and Wedum tries to tie up an arm. Nelson escapes and drops a big bomb on Werdum. Nelson standing, looking for an opportunity to drop in/ Nelson lets Werdum stand. Werdum attacks in with more knees and a quick combo to finish the round. Great round, ends 10-9 for Werdum.

Rd2: Leg kick from Werdum, big knee from Werdum to the thigh drops Nelson, but quick to his feet.  Leg kick from Nelson. Nelson checks a head kick. Leg kick from Werdum. Nelson still stalking. Werdum clinches and lands three good rights. Nelson firing away, lands an uppertcut and a left. Werdum stops his flury with a knee. Werdum seems to be slowing down at the high pace. Leg kick from Werdum. Front kick by Werdum and forward with a combo. And Nelson stalks forward. Junior couldn’t do it, doesn’t look like Werdum will be able to either. Nelson lands sending Werdum to the cage before he circles out to escape. Body kick by Werdum.  Nelson lands big sends Werdum running. Nelson stalks and Werdum catches him as well. Werdum front kick. Nelson finishes the round stalking and fires a few last shots. Closer round, lot of credit to Nelson, but Werdum still takes it 10-9.

Rd3: Nelson stalking, fires a right, Werdum attacks and shoots in, Nelson grabs a standing guillotine. Werdum escapes and attacks driving to the clinch, but Nelson controls pushing Werdum to the cage. Werdum separates with a knee. Both men looking exhausted, Nelson slowly stalks and Werdum paws out jabs to keep him distanced. Werdum lands followed with a leg kick. Body shot from Werdum. Headkick goes over the top of Nelson’s head. Werdum clinch and a knee. Leg kick from Nelson. Werdum firing away but Nelson persistently walks forward hoping to find a home for his big right. Nelson entertains the crowd with a spinning back kick. 10-9 Werdum for a clean sweep.

Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit
Rd1: No gloves touched from these two en tonight. Leg kick from Condit. Diaz stalking. Another leg kick and another. Diaz fires, but Condit evades and shoots another pair of leg kicks. Diaz clinches, Condit sends a knee and escapes. Condit backed to the cage and throws an uppercut and circles out. Another leg kick from Condit. Diaz fires again and lands one on the chin before Condit circles out again. Condit misses a head kick. Diaz sends one of his own and is checked. Diaz with a leg kick. Condit with a body shot. Condit misses another high kick. Leg kick from Condit. Diaz forward lands a left on Condit's shoulder. Fighters trade leg kicks. Condit with a spinning back fist just missing. Diaz has Condit constantly backing up. Leg kick from Condit, another. Diaz clinches and drives this one to the cage. Diaz working the body and trades in a head shot. Diaz doing his signature toying move, taunting. Condit forward and fires, and Diaz taunts again and stalks hands down. Diaz 10-9.

Rd2: Condit quickly with a high kick that misses. Again. Leg kick from Condit. Diaz presses Condit against the cage and peppers in a few shots before Condit evades. Condit lands a right. Another spinning backfist from Condit and Diaz clinches. Leg kick from Coindit. Diaz peppering shots, taunting again. Leg kick Condit, Diaz chasing, Condit kicking and throwing punches to keep separaton. Diaz lands another quick combo. Body shots from Diaz. Pair of body kicks from Condit. Body shots from Condit. Diaz with a flurry of body shots with Condit backed into the cage. Leg kick from Condit. Condit jabs and evades. Condit with a body kick and a body shot. Condit landing more this round, but Diaz stalking and owns cage control. Leg kick from Diaz. Close round 10-9 for Diaz.

Rd3: Diaz misses a pair of headkicks. Condit fakes with a jab and leg kicks. Again with a leg kick. Diaz attacks and Condit escapes. Body kick from each of them. Diaz backs up Condit and peppers him with a quick combination. Condit with a ice right. Condit with a nice high kick checked. Condit a nice combination of his own. Body kick from Diaz. Fighters trading punches, Condit evades. Body kick from Diaz. Leg kick from Condit, body shot from Diaz. Leg kick Condit. Another. Body kick from Condit. Leg kick Condit, jab and escape. Diaz attacks, but Condit circles out. Leg kick Condit. High kick from Condit followed by another leg kick and jab. Another leg kick from Condit. Diaz swings, Condit ducks under and escapes. Condit kick knee. Condit lands one of his own. Condit with a short elbow that looks like it just misses. Leg kick Condit. Body kick Diaz. Diaz one two, Condit with a bit leg kick causing him to slip to the mat. Nice round for Condit 10-9.

Rd4: Championship rounds begin. Leg kick from Condit. Another. Again. Still. Diaz peppers an attack, Condit escapes and Diaz looks annoyed. Diaz with a body kick. Diaz with a leg kick. Condit fires a shot and ducks under another. Body kick by Condit. Fighters trading punches.  Leg kick from Condit. Body shot from Diaz. Condit kick to Diaz’s face. Leg kick fro Condit. Diaz shoots, clinches, commits, but cannot get Condit down. Condit makes him pay with a couple of punches while separating. Diaz pushes Condit to the cage and fires a body shot. Condit with a spinning backfist that looks checked. Condit quick combo. Leg kik Condit. Another. Nice left lands on Diaz;s chin. Again, and Condit follows it up with a nice kick to the face! Diaz looked confused by that one. Condit with a kick to Diaz’s body. Diaz with a flurry, but Condit dusts it off. Condit in a rhythm. Condit fakes a jab ends with a solid leg kick. Diaz’s face starting to look mashed up a bit. Leg kick from Condit. Diaz with a high kick backs up Condit, but Condit circles and comes right back with a body kick. 10-9 for Condit.

Rd5: Body kick from Diaz checked. Condit with a jab and a body kick. Leg kick Condit. Diaz stalking, leg kick and body shot. Body kick from Diaz. Another. Four more all checked. Condit with a quick combination. Leg kick from Condit. Kick slaps Diaz in the face. Diaz attacks forward, Condit circles out. Diaz stalking. Diaz high kick checked. Big leg kick for Condit. Condit lands a right to Diaz’s face and finishes with a big kick to his face! Diaz clinches, Condit escapes. Condit, right jab. Diaz clinches. Condit with a  knee,. Condit combination of body shots.  Condit evading. Diaz takes his back, drags Condit to the mat. Condit elbowing Diaz behind him, but Diaz working for a choke. Locks it in but can’t hold on. Condit escapes with seconds to go, fires a shot and takes ahold of Diaz! Close round! Could go either way! Condit 10-9 for a slight win.
