The UFC is heading to Japan on Saturday for the first time in over a decade for UFC 144 at the Saitama Super Arena. The card will feature the long-awaited lightweight championship fight between champion, Frankie Edgar and top contender, Ben Henderson as well as a light heavyweight fight between Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Ryan ‘Darth’ Bader, Heavyweight bout between Mark Hunt and Cheick Kongo, welterweight showdown between Yoshihiro Akiyama and Jake Shields, a middleweight brawl between Yushin Okami and Tim Boetsch, a featherweight mix-up between Hatsu Hioki and Bart Palaszewski and a lightweight match with title possible future title implications between Anthony Pettis and Joe Lauzon.

As always, leading into the fight weekend, let’s examine the predicted outcome of the matches. Without further ado, let’s get started.

LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: FRANKIE EDGAR VS. BEN HENDERSON

Frankie Edgar will defend his title against the third contender since he’s maintained the belt. Ben Henderson however, having already derailed two lightweights in pursuit of the title in Clay Guida and Jim Miller, looks to put a halt to Edgar’s hype train and claim the title for himself claiming that he has nothing short of Anderson Silva’s title records in mind. These two fighters combine for a career record of twenty-nine wins with only three losses. Edgar’s only loss came in 2008 which he later went on to avenge that loss with a fourth round TKO stoppage over Gray Maynard.

Henderson owns the size advantage in this one, standing three inches taller than Edgar. Edgar however, brings fierce conditioning and incredible footwork into this contest. Edgar throughout much of his career has been a significant underdog mostly credited to his size disadvantage, but with his hard work, determination and relentless pace of action, Edgar has been able to overcome all adversities. I think his speed and conditioning will be too much to keep up with, become evident in later rounds, especially towards the championship rounds and Edgar will work this fight to an impressive unanimous decision.

QUINTON ‘RAMPAGE’ JACKSON VS. RYAN ‘DARTH’ BADER

Former light heavyweight champion, Quinton Jackson, will take on Ryan Bader as both fighters begin their climb back to the top. Jackson’s last fight was for the title against current champion, Jon Jones, in which he suffered his first and only stoppage loss of his UFC career. Jackson however, despite much criticism and questioning of his heart and interest towards the sport entered that bout in the best conditioning we’ve seen from him in quite some time. ‘Rampage’ displayed some promising moments in that matchup, but eventually the unstoppable champion proved to be too much sinking in a rear-naked choke for the victory.

Ryan Bader opened his career a perfect 12-0 before walking into the same buzz-saw in Jon Jones also falling victim to submission. Following that loss, Bader walked into another trap when an amazing conditioned Tito Ortiz, fighting for his career, caught him and also sunk him into a forced tap-out. Bader, looking to get back on track, displayed a solid performance at UFC 139 knocking out Jason Brilz early in the very first round and now seeks a similar performance against Jackson hoping to propel himself back up the ranks.

As previously mentioned, the UFC is making their first trip back to Japan in over a decade. This is a significant travel, change in atmosphere, climate, body clock a possibly nutrition. Jackson having previously fought with PRIDE has much experience fighting in Japan, enjoys fighting in Japan, and actually claims that he prefers Japan to the U.S. in many ways. For Bader on the other hand, this will be a whole new ball game. Jackson is also the better striker, and provided he can stay on his feet, I imagine he aggressively stalks Bader. Bader’s best bet for this fight resides with his wrestling if he can take this fight to the mat as Evans was able to, but I think Jackson prepares as such and shrugs off Bader’s attempts. Jackson by TKO.

MAIN EVENT PREDICTIONS:

Frankie Edgar def. Ben Henderson by UD.

Quinton Jackson def. Ryan Bader byTKO

Cheick Kongo def. Mark Hunt by UD.

Jake Shields def. Yoshihiro Akiyama by Submission.

Yushin Okami def. Tim Boetsch by UD.

Bart Palaszewski def. Hatsu Hioki by TKO

Anthony Pettis def. Joe Lauzon by UD.
